This relic just (slowly) rolled into my street. Just as I approached it, the unmistakable stench of a head gasket leak made its way into my nose. It was a slushbox.

1992 Mercury Topaz 3.0 V6 automatic transmission..... Best $600 I ever spent. 3 years, 40,000 miles, 2 repairs to totaling less than $100 total. Surprisingly good in snow. I donated it when the time came for her to go and got a bigger tax write off than what I paid for the car. Got rid of it in 2005.

As far as I can remember, my driver's training was in grey Ford Tempo.

5-7 years ago, there was an '87 Tempo (in a goldish beige color) which sat behind the garage for a couple years because the transmission was slipping, and it would lose weight (in rust) every time you closed the doors. It was a shitbox, but there was one good time had in it:
The day before we scrapped it, I poured an ounce of brake fluid into the tranny, jumped it, and let it warm up a few seconds, then rallied it up and down the back lane a couple times. I don't think many people can say they've gotten air in an 87 tempo, but with the condition of that lane, it wasn't too difficult to get 2 of 4 wheels up in the air.
End of the day I locked up all 4 wheels and slid it back into (roughly) where it had been sitting for years, amongst some small trees and brush. The next day when I got home from school it was gone, never to be seen again.

I had a car with a similar fate. However, it wasn't rallied at all, just sat until its corroded demise. My father's 1988 VW Fox (white) sat in the backyard over 10 years ago, I always snuck in whenever I had the chance, and pretended to 'drive' it. the beige interior left a pleasing aroma, the analog dash clock was unique, while other cars we had already switched to digital LCDs. I remember helping my father bump start it down a hill one time, when it was his daily, just needed an impulse to push it over the edge, which I did. I heard the thing roar to life up in the distance, such an amazing thing. I shed a tear when I saw that car go, it was a companion of sorts to me.

I actually have a 93 Tempo that I DD. Slushbox but I can't kill it. 229K. Cheap, dependable but rusted to hell. It looks like I drove through a salt mine. Dreadful to drive, but my god will it not die. Ive had it 2 years and it has only failed to start twice. Dead battery and a failed starter. I beat the crap out of it too delivering pizza in, slap snow tires on it and it will go anywhere my Forester does with much less fuss. I hate it but I love it.

Thank you for this bait Zippy. I am hooked. Sorry guys, I can't unlike the Ford Tempo. It was my first, and so I will always have a soft spot. Despite at one point the car losing 3rd gear in the slush box and then becoming a 2 speed with a top speed of 55mph.

Must have come from out west, notice the plate series "BR" can't be more than 1 or two years old.

Yes. The 3.0 vulcan was actually a good fit in these unlike all the heavier cars Ford out it in.

Mine got killed when I drove into an F150 at 35 mph. Try that, should kill it.

At least you found yourself at a young age. Most people go their whole life without ever discovering their true calling.

It was certainly bought before my Escape, and after my friend bought his Mustang in May 2013. The Escape was a BV (I still have the plate) and the Mustang is a BP, so I'm guessing about a year.
